Do my purchases help an artisan? Yes, rest assured, your Conscious Consumer purchase of our Fair Trade business will make a difference in the life of the artisans. We provide between 30-40 percent of our sales to artisans in lower developed countries. And the artisans are paid up-front for the costs of their production. Additionally, the economic impact reaches farther into the community as artisans are able to buy groceries at the local shop or send their children to a school in their communities. When the beads arrive they have a slight smell of glue. What does that mean? When the beads first arrive to the US, they have been sealed in plastic bags for many days. They are sorted and hung, and most of the odor dissipates quickly. If you receive an order that is a new arrival, simply hand the beads out in the room air, or even outdoors, and the odor will leave. Care of the artisans’ health is of up-most importance, in fact, prime. Our company insists the artisans work in ventilated circumstances, almost always outdoors, for they have no indoor space. The women must use masks and gloves when applying varnish and are encouraged to brush on the varnish. We are always seeking to select environmentally friendly and non-toxic ingredients for finishing the beads. Are varnished necklaces safe? Yes. We have every reason to believe so. It may be similar to finger nail polish. At first it has an odor, but soon the odor is gone. Absolutely no necklaces to date have ever been returned, in fact for any reason (7.21.08). The owner of Fair World Designs wore one large beaded necklace 24 hours a day for two weeks, in and out of the ocean, while on vacation. The necklace retained its original finish and the owner saw no skin sensitivity.
