The Story of the Bamboo Handbag

I lived in Bangkok and Chiang Mai as a young girl.
My mother had a beautiful Thai bamboo handbag, which has now been passed to me.
I am still amazed at how it has endured over the years and how I can still proudly use it.
On a recent visit to Northern Thailand, I found these unique bags.
The old antique patterns are still being made at home, in the “cottage.”
The bamboo is dyed of many wonderful colors.
The reeds are dried, often still over smoky open fires.
When your bamboo handbag arrives, it may still breathe of a faint outdoor smoke, which will soon dissipate.
As you use your bag, it will become softer and more pliable, as did my mother’s bag.
The bag is double lined in quilted silk, produced by use of hand looms.
The ties draw and end with a teak ball, which is a native tree of Thailand.
You can enjoy this unique hand-crafted bamboo handbag, while knowing you are keeping the bamboo art alive and providing meaning for women who still prefer to work in their homes and villages.
